Perhaps one of the most-studied essential oils, scientists have confirmed that lavender is effective in treating a variety of conditions, from insomnia and fatigue to anxiety and depression. (Click here and here for just a few out of many sources on this subject!)
Lavender is known today mostly for its relaxation properties, but its use can be traced back to the ancient Romans, who used lavender flowers in their baths and linens. The word Lavender is derived from the Latin word Lavera, or 'to wash' - it's no surprise that there are many recorded instances of Lavender being used for bathing rituals in various ancient civilizations!
Here are a few more interesting historic facts about Lavender (source: joys-of-lavender.com):
- Lavender has a long history of being a favourite amongst royalty: Queen Elizabeth I drank lavender tea for her migraine headaches, lavender-scented waters and soaps were used by the wife of King Charles I, and Queen Victoria insisted her floors and furniture be washed with lavender, making it a fashionable fragrance amongst nobility.
- During London's Great Plague in the 17th century, lavender was tied to each wrist to ward off infection.
- Lavender was used as an antiseptic during World War I.
- French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse burned his hand while working in his lab in the early 1900. After sticking his hand in a nearby container of lavender oil, his hand healed faster and didn't scar - it also stopped hurting!
Here's one more factoid our knitter friends will appreciate: many shepherds have used lavender to disinfect wounds and sores while out in the field - and they've even been known to disinfect the umbilical cords of lambs this way, too!
Eucalan’s Lavender No Rinse Delicate Wash is scented using the essential oil of lavender - besides the pleasant, calming aroma, your fibres will reap the natural moth- and flea-inhibiting benefits as well as the antiseptic properties of this timeless fragrance.
